Middlesbrough timeline
- · Third Division · Administration
Middlesbrough, just relegated to the Third Division, had been in the hands of a provisional liquidator since May 1986, and a winding-up order followed in late July over tax arrears. The club was saved by a new company formed by a consortium led by Steve Gibson. This was a liquidation of the old company rather than a formal administration, so it is recorded as an administration-type event. It came after the club's final 1985-86 fixture, so it counts in 1986-87. No points deduction applied (the Football League's automatic administration penalty did not exist until 2004-05).
Outcome: Survived. Old company wound up after an Inland Revenue winding-up order in late July 1986; a consortium (Gibson, ICI and others) formed Middlesbrough Football & Athletic Company (1986) Ltd and registered with the Football League minutes before the deadline, keeping the club's place for 1986-87.
