Maidstone United timeline
- · Third Division · Resigned
Heavily in debt and unable to guarantee fixtures, Maidstone United announced their resignation from the Football League on 17 August 1992. Liquidators had been called in after takeover attempts failed. The resignation came before the 1992-93 season had started for them, so it counts in 1992-93, when they were due to play in the Third Division (tier 4). No points deduction applied (the Football League's automatic administration penalty did not exist until 2004-05).
Owner at the time: Jim Thompson (chairman)
Outcome: Phoenix club. Liquidators were called in and the club resigned from the Football League days into 1992-93 without playing a game; their opening game at Scunthorpe had been postponed. A new club, Maidstone Invicta (later Maidstone United), restarted at the bottom of the pyramid.
