Luton Town timeline

  1. · Second Division · Administration

Luton Town went into receivership in March 1999, after the Kohlerdome stadium plan was rejected and chairman David Kohler failed to sell his stake. Buchler Phillips were appointed (Wikipedia gives 20 March 1999). Receivership is recorded here as an administration-type event. No points deduction applied (the Football League's automatic administration penalty did not exist until 2004-05).

Outcome: Survived. The club continued in the Second Division and was sold to Cliff Bassett before the 1999-00 season (per Wikipedia, unverified).

  2. · Second Division · Administration

Major creditor Hatters Holdings put Luton Town into administrative receivership (a non-court receivership procedure, recorded here as administration), removing John Gurney's control after a turbulent summer. Bill Tomlins' consortium bought the club in 2004.

Owner at the time: John Gurney

Outcome: Survived. Administrative receivers ran the club until a takeover by a consortium led by Bill Tomlins was agreed in principle by the League in May 2004.

  3. · League One · Administration · -30 points

Luton Town were placed into administration on 22 November 2007 and deducted 10 points in League One. Because no CVA was agreed, the Football League imposed a further 20-point deduction for the 2008-09 League Two season.

Owner at the time: David Pinkney (chairman)

Outcome: Survived. 10 points in 2007-08 (League One) plus 20 points for 2008-09 (League Two) for failing to exit administration via a CVA; club taken over by Luton Town 2020. Old company in creditors' voluntary liquidation from 17 Nov 2008. A separate 10-point FA penalty for payments to agents (total -30 start to 2008-09) is NOT included.
