Exeter City timeline

  1. · Third Division · Administration

Exeter City, relegated to the bottom division in 1994, entered administration on 4 November 1994 after mounting debts of over GBP 1m. The club was in administration for almost two years. No points deduction applied (the Football League's automatic administration penalty did not exist until 2004-05).

Owner at the time: Ivor Doble (chairman)

Outcome: Survived. St James Park was sold to Beazer Homes and later bought back by Exeter City Council and leased to the club. Administration was discharged on 23 July 1996 (Companies House); the club says it came out on 1 August 1996.

  2. · Football Conference · CVA

Newly relegated to the Conference with reported debts of GBP 2m, Exeter City entered a company voluntary arrangement in October 2003 after a fans' takeover of the boardroom. A threatened 12-point deduction was never applied.

Outcome: Survived. In March 2004 the Conference agreed not to impose the threatened 12-point penalty, because penalties for a CVA or administration would only apply from the next season.
