    Second Division Barnsley petitioned the High Court in Leeds for an administration order after refinancing talks collapsed, with Charles Escott and Matthew Dunham as joint administrators. The club stayed in administration for about a year until Peter Ridsdale's takeover.

    Owner at the time: John Dennis (chairman)

    Outcome: Survived. Peter Ridsdale completed a takeover on 25 October 2003, buying the club and Barnsley Holdings from previous owner Peter Doyle, which ended the administration.
