WatchAlong: Match of the Day – 7th January 1989
Good evening, lovelies, and welcome to another brief Covid-19 experiment. We’ve done the 50 greatest goal posts of all-time, tried to get our heads round what the football might look like when it comes back, and even introduced a new podcast series on old football video games, but let’s be honest… all this speculation about the future of football is little more than idle speculation and, of course, in the absence of anything else to talk about, it’s pretty much all that any football outlet is talking about at the moment.
With this in mind, it’s time to take another step back into the comforting glow of nostalgia. This nostalgia, however, at least comes with a veneer of authenticity. We’re live-blogging an episode of Match of the Day, as it was broadcast more than thirty years ago, and if it works then it’s something that I might even come back to. And the first episode that I’ve picked is a genuine slice of English football history. It’s from FA Cup Third Round Day, the 7th of January 1989, the day that Sutton United of the GM Vauxhall Conference played Coventry City of the First Division, who’d won the Cup just two years earlier, at Gander Green Lane. In addition to this, the BBC also had highlights of the match between Bradford City and Tottenham Hotspur, and between West Bromwich Albion and Everton.
