Video of the Day: Nottingham Forest vs Liverpool, September 1978

by | Mar 8, 2016

It’s now almost forty years since Nottingham Forest surprised English football in a way that may be starting to feel eerily familiar to supporters watching Premier League football this season. Brian Clough had arrived at The City Ground in 1975, taking Forest into the First Division of the Football League and then to the top of that division at the end of the 1977/78 season. The draw once there, however, was not a kind one. For the club’s first ever European tie, they were drawn to play the team that won the completion for the previous two years and, somewhat coincidentally, were from the same country as them.

Liverpool had won the last two European Cups, against Borussia Moenchengladbach in Rome in 1977 and against Club Brugge at Wembley the following year. A daunting prospect but Forest were the defending English champions and the winners of this tie would be considered amongst the favourites to win the 1979 European Cup. With a second leg at Anfield to look forward to, then Forest were looking to build up a bit of a buffer in the first leg at The City Ground. ATV’s cameras were there to cover the match for ITV, and commentary comes from Hugh Johns.
