Video of the Day: Everton vs Manchester City, February 1986

by | Aug 21, 2017

In this evening’s live Premier League match, Manchester City take on Everton at the Etihad Stadium. This has been a summer of change for both clubs, with City completely rebuilding their defence and Everton welcoming back their prodigal son, and both teams begin this season with a degree of optimism. For Manchester City, this means the prospect of a serious tilt at the league title for the first time in three years. For Everton, the aspiration is to try and break through that glass ceiling and into the top six again for the first time since 2014.

Three decades ago, things were somewhat different. Everton had ended the previous season as the champions of England and winners of the European Cup Winners Cup, only seeing their hopes of a treble dashed in extra-time in the FA Cup final against Manchester United. Manchester City, on the other hand, were just emerging from what might be charitably described as a fallow period. The club’s decline from the late 1970s on had been sharp. Runners-up in 1977 and fourth-placed the following year, it only took five years for the club to be relegated from the First Division for the first time since the mid-1960s, famously falling through the trapdoor at home against Luton Town on the last day of the 1982/83 season in front of the cameras of Match Of The Day.

In the Second Division the following season they missed out on promotion by some ten points, behind Chelsea, Sheffield Wednesday and Newcastle United, but they squeezed back up the following season on the very last day, edging out Portsmouth, Blackburn Rovers and Brighton & Hove Albion, all three of whom finished within two points of City. Back in the First Division for the following season, their trip to Goodison Park for a First Division match saw them in a lower mid-table position, with Everton seeking to defend their title against strong challenges from both Liverpool and West Ham United.
