Video of the Day: The 1995 FA Cup Final

by | May 20, 2016

The 1994/95 season was not especially kind to Manchester United. Having won the league and cup double at the end of the previous season, they started as the favourites to regain their crown, but a financially plumpened Blackburn Rovers pipped them to that particular title with a team led by Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton which could even afford to lose their last match of the season as Manchester United also lost theirs, at West Ham United. With the League Cup having been won by Liverpool, who had beaten Bolton Wanderers in the final of that competition, this was United’s last chance to rescue something from an underwhelming season.

Everton, meanwhile, had endured another disappointing season in the league, finishing in fifteenth place in the table and only five places above the relegation. Manager Mike Walker had been sacked in November of the previous year after having won only one of their first fourteen games of the season, and his replacement, Joe Royle, had led the team just clear of the relegation places and then on an FA Cup run that saw the team get past Derby County, Bristol City, Norwich City, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur to claim a place at Wembley. Manchester United, meanwhile, beat Sheffield United, Wrexham, Leeds United, Queens Park Rangers and Crystal Palace to reach the final.

So, here we have a full episode of Cup Final Grandstand from that day. Those of you that saw our post late last night on the 1983 FA Cup Final will note that it’s a couple of hours shorter than that one, which can only partially be explained by a lack of extra time (the possible influence of the Premier League, there), but all of the familiar trappings of the big day are present and correct, and the commentary for it all comes from Barry Davies.
