We even now have a Kofi button, so do feel free to feed me stimulants I’m order to keep me cracking on in a caffeine-fuelled state of delirium until four o’clock every morning. My inevitable meltdown will be immense.
My first visit to Underhill was for the first match of the 87/88 season when Lincoln came to Barnet to start kicking their way out of “non-League”. This was the season of the temporary Conference-only law change which meant that nobody could be offside from a free kick, and I distinctly remember Lincoln’s tall forwards standing on the Barnet’s goalkeeper’s feet at every opportunity. Not long into the game Barnet’s veteran midfielder John Margerrison was clattered with some malice and had to be carried off and didn’t play again that season. Lincoln defender and part-time tree trunk Steve Buckley was noticeably rattled by an unobliging heckle from a spectator (me), who had previously held a good opinion of him during his time at Luton. My favourite moment of the game was when the Lincoln keeper, one Nigel Batch, air-kicked a clearance and was rounded and beaten by Barnet’s own perma-tanned white-teethed hero Nicky Evans. Barnet went on to win the game but eventually lost the war as Lincoln went straight back up, but Lincoln’s antics left a nasty taste that day.
That’s rich Colin Davey. The real thugs that season were Barnet. I take it you didn’t come to Sincil Bank for the return fixture . I knew the referee Mr. West and he described Barnet and Fry as the worst animals he had ever experienced in football. Despite the whole Conference conspiring to keep ‘big time Charlies’ Lincoln in non league football they failed. How’s it going in The National League these days?
