Video of the Day: Aston Villa vs Norwich City, November 1992
History is written by the victors. The inaugural season of the Premier League is now widely recognised as the season that ended with Manchester United being crowned as the champions of England for the first time in twenty-six years, but this was a championship race that went to the last couple of weeks, and two teams that were amongst their most persistent challengers over the course of the season were not clubs expected to find themselves in the position in which they were when it all kicked off in August, Aston Villa and Norwich City.
Aston Villa supporters looking up mournfully from the bottom of this year’s Premier League table can only dream of the wealth of talent at the club’s talent that season. Players such as Kevin Richardson, Dalian Atkinson, Dean Saunders, Ray Houghton and Steve Staunton graced the Villa Park pitch that season, and the club finished the season deservedly in second place in the table, ten points behind the champions. Norwich City, meanwhile, ended the season in third place in the table. Having been amongst the pre-season favourites to be relegated, they led the table for much of the season before stumbling at the end. The following season, they knocked Bayern Munich out of the UEFA Cup.
In November 1992, Villa took on Norwich at Villa Park. The visitors went into the match four points clear at the top of the table, with ten wins from their sixteen matches played up to that point. Villa, meanwhile, sat in fourth place, behind Norwich, second placed Arsenal and third placed Blackburn Rovers. At this time, for those of you that are idly wondering, Manchester United were down in eighth place in the table, nine points from the top spot. Commentary is from Tony Gubba.
