Video of the Day: Luton Town vs Liverpool, 1987

by | Jan 10, 2016

It’s FA Cup Third Round Sunday today, so today is the last Video of the Day that focuses on this stage of the competition, and we’re going back to the 1987 competition for this afternoon’s featured match. This match is all about the period detail. For one thing, it’s a second replay following two goalless draws. Penalty shootouts wouldn’t make their FA Cup debut for a further four years. For another, Liverpool had completed the league and FA Cup double the season before, meaning that they started against Luton Town – even though their hosts were in the same division as them at the time- as hot favourites to win the match. Finally, it’s worth considering the artificial surface upon which the match was being played. Four and a half years after this match, this pitch would be ripped up as plastic pitches were banned from Football League grounds.
