Video Of The Day: Everton vs Aston Villa, December 1981

by | Mar 1, 2016

Aston Villa play Everton this evening in a match which reeks of the history of the English game. These are two clubs whose very names help to define football in this country. Aston Villa, founder members of the Football League in 1888, former champions and European champions, the biggest club in England’s second city. Everton, the second longest standing club in the top flight of our league system. How many more times, though, will these two clubs play each other? Villa, it is generally mow conceded, are headed for the Football League Championship, and many are reckoning that they won’t find it easy to get back.

With this in mind, today’s video of the day is a throwback to a simpler era. A week before Christmas 1981, Aston Villa were the Champions of England and fighting to win the European Cup. Our video is a complete edition of Match of the Day from the 19th December 1981, and also features a club in a fug of their own at the time who provide proof that the bad times don’t necessarily last forever. Chelsea vs Blackburn Rovers, from the Second Division. Commentaries come from John Motson and Barry Davies, and the show is presented by Jimmy Hill.
