Video of the Day: Cambridge United vs Exeter City, April 1978

by | Jan 14, 2016

We’re taking a detour to the lower divisions for this morning’s video of the day, to The Abbey Stadium for a Third Division match between Cambridge United and Exeter City. Cambridge had been elected into the Football League in 1970 in place of Bradford Park Avenue, winning promotion to the Third Division in 1974 before being relegated straight back from whence they came. In 1977, however, the team was promoted again, this time as champions under the management of one Ron Atkinson. Atkinson left the club in January 1978 to manage West Bromwich Albion in the First Division, but Cambridge stayed in contention for a second successive promotion, going into their final match of the season needing just a point from their final match of the season against lower mid-table Exeter City to guarantee a place in the Second Division of the Football League for the first time in the club’s history. Commentary comes from Gerry Harrison.
