Video of the Day: Liverpool vs Arsenal, April 1977

Liverpool continue their Champions League adventure with the return leg of their qualifying match against Hoffenheim this evening carrying a slender leg into the second leg. As such, it’s impossible to resist the temptation to go back to a time when the club was at the cusp of a period of its history that would see it win the European Cup four times in seven years.

Towards the end of the 1976/77 season, the club was honing in on its second consecutive Football League title. Having pipped Queens Park Rangers to the post at the end of the previous season, this time around the team was being pushed all the way by Manchester City. This match turned out to be in the middle of the run that won the team the trophy.

Six wins in eight matches between the second weekend in March and the first weekend in May was enough to lift the title, even though three draws and a defeat from their final four matches of the season – the team’s attention perhaps diverted by an upcoming European Cup final in Rome against Borussia Moenchengladbach – meant that City were able to cut the eventual deficit to just a single point. Arsenal, meanwhile, would go on end the season in eight place in the table.
