Video of the Day: Coventry City vs Blackburn Rovers, 1995

by | Aug 7, 2017

Coventry City play Blackburn Rovers in the First Round of the League Cup tomorrow night. Both sides, it might well be argued, are at the lowest ebbs in their recent histories, with Coventry having been relegated to League Two and Blackburn to League One at the end of last season, although Coventry City did at least get their new season underway with a comfortable home win against Notts County at the weekend. Blackburn, however, lost by the odd goal in three at Southend United. Their waiting spell in football purgatory continues.

For this morning’s video, however, we travel back in time to a very different era indeed. At the end of 1995, Blackburn were the champions of England and both clubs were in the Premier League. So it was that Blackburn made the trip to the West Midlands for a match featuring a snow-covered pitch, an orange ball, and a nasty surprise for the defending champions. One gets the feeling, however, that Rovers supporters would probably even swap a five goal defeat in the snow at Coventry for their club’s current predicament. After all, despite this defeat they still ended their season in seventh place in the Premier League table. Coventry City, meanwhile, ended their season two places above the relegation places, separated from the drop only by goal difference, much of it earned from this one spectacular victory.
