The next seven days see two celebrations. As you will no doubt be aware, today is Hallowe’en, an event that has grown enormously in popularity in Britain over the last decade or so, whilst on the fifth of November people in the UK will be celebrating Bonfire Night, when the anniversary of a foiled attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605 is marked with fireworks and, umm, occasional effigies of Catholics being burnt at the stake. In view of all of this, then, what better way, we thought, than to mark these twin events by discussing the point at which they intersect? So it is that this week’s Twohundredpercent podcast is about capital punishment, and we’ll be touching on last meals, the grisly end of Guy Fawkes, and – of course! – our favourite methods of execution.
