Midweek Non-League Videos: The Blue Square South Title Race

There was a full round of matches in all three divisions the Football Conference this week, and it looks like being a very tight season in the Conference South. Today, there are just ten points between the team at the top of the table and the team in fourteenth place, and there seems little between the top three sides, with others lower down the table looking more than capable of joining them. We have four matches for you from Tuesday night, and three of them feature the sides at the very top of the table. First up is the match between Bromley, who are sitting just below mid-way in the table, and Woking, who went into the match in second place in the table if they could win and the leaders, Welling United, failed to beat Boreham Wood, which is our second match. Boreham Wood went into the match in the relegation places in the division. The third match is also from the very top of the table, between Dartford and struggling Staines Town. Finally, we have a first appearance on this site for a club that may yet feature in the battle for a place in the play-offs come the end of the season: Salisbury City. They were at home on Tuesday night against Basingstoke Town having been promoted at the end of last season, while Basingstoke hold...

Non-League Videos Of The Week: 14/08/2011

The non-league season – the Isthmian League aside – started yesterday, and we’re delighted to be able to bring you highlights of four matches this evening, one from the Blue Square Premier, two from the Blue Square South and one from the Premier Division of the Southern League. The first match is between Hayes & Yeading United and Alfreton Town. Hayes & Yeading are starting a season in exile at Woking, having sold their Church Road ground without the former home of Yeading, The Warren, and the problems that they may face were placed into sharp focus by the fact that a crowd of just 262 people turned out for this match yesterday. A decade ago, Alfreton Town were beginning a season that would see them win the Northern Counties East League. Yesterday, they were playing their first match as a Blue Square Premier club. Our second match is from the Blue Square South, and is between Chelmsford City and Truro City. Chelmsford have been beaten in the semi-finals in the play-offs for the last three seasons, and will start this season with expectations of going one better than that this time around. Four years ago, meanwhile, Truro City were in the Premier Division of the Western League, but they start this season one step away from football’s fifth division, and optimistic of going higher than that themselves. We’re...

The Twohundredpercent Pre-Season Predictions: Conference South

There is a lot of money flying about in the Blue Square South this season as the teams jostle to fill the void at the top left by Braintree Town and Ebbsfleet United. The gap between those with a decent budget and those without seems to be growing a bit more in the southern half of Step 2 than in the northern half. Oh and all the teams who have enjoyed a nice little comfort zone around the M25 and M4 corridor have a lovely jaunt down to Cornwall to look forward too. Promotion Contenders Woking seem to be nailed on favourites to win the league and its certain that they have a very strong squad. But they will face some stiff competition from Dover Athletic, Chelmsford City and Eastbourne Borough. Gary Hill turned the squad when he joined as manager last season so expect big things in his first full season in charge, reports from pre-season games suggest they are looking like a quality side already. The fact that some players have taken a wage cut in order to stay suggests a team with proper ambition. Dover Athletic may have lost talisman striker Adam Birchall to Gillingham but they should still give the top teams a run for their money. In comes George Purcell from York CIty, he’s full fit after an injury-ravaged season but should be on...

Non-League Videos Of The Week, Part One

If you’re viewing this site from a mobile phone you would be best advised to click the link at the bottom of this page, which will take you to the desktop version of this site. We’ve got a two-part Non-League Videos Of The Week for this this week, with more to follow in a day or two. First up is the match between Wrexham and Gateshead for the Blue Square Premier. We’ll have more tomorrow on what has been going on at the club over the last few days and it is probably fair to say that what happened on the pitch at The Racecourse Ground on Saturday afternoon were always going to be overshadowed by events off the pitch, no matter how remarkable the game itself was. Wrexham held Crawley Town to a draw during the week and went into Saturday’s match in the play-off places, whilst mid-table Gateshead had the look of being too good to go down this season but not good enough to challenge for a play-off place. Or, at least, they had until Saturday. Our second match is the match between FC United of Manchester and Burscough from the Premier Division of the Evostik League. FCUM have won eight, drawn one and lost two of their eleven matches since losing to FC Halifax Town on New Year’s Day, a run that has propelled them...
