Non-League Videos Of The Week: 22-04-2012

It’s the penultimate week of the non-league season, and while most of the championship issues have now been resolved there are still relegation places to be filled at the bottom of many of the tables. We’ve got a mixture of the top and the bottom of the tables for you this evening, kicking off with the bottom of the Blue Square Premier. The relegation places are already decided, but AFC Telford United went into their final home match of the season looking to boost their league position with a win against Grimsby Town, while Newport County prepared for their forthcoming FA Trophy final with a home match against Alfreton Town and Forest Green Rovers played already relegated Darlington. In the Blue Square Bet South, meanwhile, champions Woking were at home against Truro City, whilst at the bottom of the table Farnborough and Havant & Waterlooville both went into their match at Cherrywood Road needing a win to avoid relegation from the division. Finally, we’re off to the Southern League Premier Division, where Weymouth needed a win against Hitching Town in order to guarantee avoiding relegation themselves. Our thanks, as ever, go to those that take the time to record, edit and upload these matches. You can follow Twohundredpercent on Twitter by clicking...

Non-League Videos Of The Week

We have a lot of videos to get through for this week’s non-league videos of the week, as the non-league season comes to an end and the end of season play-offs begin. First up, comes a match from the race for the play-off places in the Blue Square South. With Braintree Town already promoted to the Blue Square Premier as champions of the division, most eyes on the last day of the season turned to the question of who will be joining them. Chelmsford City have been hanging around the play-off places for most of the season, and they went into their final league match of the season knowing that a win would guarantee them a place in the Blue Square South play-offs. They were at home against a Hampton & Richmond Borough side that have spent much of their season just above the relegation places and who went into Saturday’s match already safe in the knowledge that they were just about already safe.   The Blue Square South play-off semi-finals will, therefore, be between Farnborough FC and Woking, while Chelmsford City will travel to Ebbsfleet United in the other match. In the Premier Division of the Ryman League, meanwhile, a similar situation had arisen. Sutton United had been crowned as the champions of the division several weeks ago, but the race for the play-off places has been one...

The Twohundredpercent Play-Off Jamboree: Hitchin Town 4-1 Slough Town

As things turned out, the points deduction didn’t make any difference. Arlesey Town won by a single goal at Hitchin Town in the Zamaretto League Central Division on Monday afternoon and, such is the way of things at the end of the season, Hitchin are back in action this evening in the semi-finals of the play-offs against Slough Town. While there is nowhere near the 1,500 that turned out for the championship decider on Monday present this evening (one might be tempted to wonder what happened to those other 900 people), there is another healthy crowd here this evening of just over 600 for this match. These two matches between them will certainly have something of a smile across the face of those in charge of the club’s accounts. Meanwhils, Slough Town are, for people of a certain age, still a big club. Former members of what we now know as the Blue Square Premier, their fall from grace coincided with their eviction from Wexham Park in 2003. Nowadays, they groundshare with Beaconsfield SYCOB whilst still agitating for a return to their home town, and a small sense of their former scale as a club can be gauged from their rambunctious travelling support of well over 100 people here this evening. They lost out in the play-offs in this division last season, but their supporters seem optimistic. Promotion might...

A Points Deduction Which Invites Conspiracy Theories

The non-league football season wouldn’t be the non-league football season without promotion and relegation decisions coming under the spotlight on account of off the field events, and this season has, eventually, been no exception. We’ll be returning to the subject of Eastwood Town and their failure to convince the Football Conference to allow them to play in the Blue Square North play-offs at the end of the season next week, but first of all it’s time to head over to the Zamaretto League, where a points deduction has thrown a previously decided league title wide open with just one match of the normal season left to play. Arlesey Town believed that they won the Division One Central of the league a couple of weeks ago, but the league title race has been thrown wide open again after they were deducted nine points for fielding an ineligible player earlier on during the season. This decision – which the club had appealed against, only for their appeal to already have been partly rejected, means that their seven point lead at the top of the table has evaporated. They will go into their final match of the season two points behind the new leaders, Hitchin Town, and it just so happens that their final match of the season will be… away to Hitchin Town, tomorrow. This isn’t the first time that this...
