Non-League Videos Of The Week: 22-04-2012

It’s the penultimate week of the non-league season, and while most of the championship issues have now been resolved there are still relegation places to be filled at the bottom of many of the tables. We’ve got a mixture of the top and the bottom of the tables for you this evening, kicking off with the bottom of the Blue Square Premier. The relegation places are already decided, but AFC Telford United went into their final home match of the season looking to boost their league position with a win against Grimsby Town, while Newport County prepared for their forthcoming FA Trophy final with a home match against Alfreton Town and Forest Green Rovers played already relegated Darlington. In the Blue Square Bet South, meanwhile, champions Woking were at home against Truro City, whilst at the bottom of the table Farnborough and Havant & Waterlooville both went into their match at Cherrywood Road needing a win to avoid relegation from the division. Finally, we’re off to the Southern League Premier Division, where Weymouth needed a win against Hitching Town in order to guarantee avoiding relegation themselves. Non-League Videos Of The Week: The Blue Square Premier & The FA Cup

This weekend’s non-league videos of the week come from the Blue Square Premier and the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Cup. In the Blue Square Premier, AFC Telford United have reacted positively to their promotion from the Blue Square North at the end of last season and sit in mid-table in the division at present and they were at home against Hayes & Yeading United, who were the beneficiaries of Kettering Town’s generosity – and subsequent implosion on Tuesday night. Our second match from the Blue Square Premier is between two sides that have been in the news for different reasons over the last few weeks or months. The green revolution is apace at Forest Green Rovers, and they were at home on Saturday against Mansfield Town. The remainder of our matches for this evening all come from the FA Cup Second Qualifying Round. First up is the match between two teams with FA Cup pedigrees of their own – Blyth Spartans and Bedlington Terriers. Blyth still probably best known for their run to the Fifth Round of the competition in 1978, whilst Bedlington beat Colchester United by four goals to one in the First Round of the competition in 1998/99 before losing to Scunthorpe United in the next round. Coming up next is a Kent derby match between Bromley and Welling United, Redbridge and Bury Town, Dartford...

Food For Thought At Forest Green Rovers

After another close shave with relegation last year Forest Green Rovers have enjoyed a decent start to the season, they’ve picked up a few points, turned down an offer from Luton for striker Reece Styche, who then signed a new deal to keep him at the New Lawn and seen six of their players named in the England C squad. But once again the non-football stuff is still troubling some of the fan base.

Back in May I wrote about how Forest Green Rovers were undergoing a little off the pitch rebrand, a new club crest, a ‘removal’ of red meat from the menu on match days and at events, a tying together with Ecotricity, the energy company run by chairman Dale Vince. A former new age traveller, Vince has very strong eco-ethics – he drives an electric car, has an electric motorbike and is a green-energy evangelist. He is a committed vegan, he supports local environmental schemes such as the Bee Guardians and without shadow of a doubt saved Forest Green Rovers from oblivion when he became the major shareholder around this time last year.

He is also a very shrewd businessman, who has turned Ecotricity into a big, successful brand. And therein surely lies the key to some of the long-term plans for the club, outlined on the natty new website (which includes Ecotricity’s green union jack down the...
