Non-League Videos Of The Week: The Blue Square South

Refreshed and reposed after a break for Christmas, we’re back this morning with a double dose of Non-League Videos Of The Week. We have a couple of matches from the Blue Square Premier coming up a little later this morning, but we are starting off with five of Boxing Day’s matches from the Blue Square South. Leaders Woking have pulled clear at the top of the table, and they attracted a crowd of over three thousand people for their match against Farnborough, but the chasing pack were also in action and we have derby matches between Chelmsford City and Thurrock, Bromley and Tonbridge Angels, Dover Athletic and Eastbourne Borough and Welling United and Dartford. As ever, our thanks go to those that record, edit and upload these matches.   You can follow Twohundredpercent on Twitter by clicking...

A Phoenix With Trimmed Wings: Farnborough FC’s New Reality

The fifteenth of May must have felt like a long time ago for the supporters of Farnborough FC on Tuesday night. On that particular day, Farnborough stood at the cusp of a place in the Blue Square Premier. Having finished in second place in the Blue Square South behind champions Braintree Town, they started their play-off final with home advantage and as the favourites to beat Ebbsfleet United. Their visitors, however, hadn’t been reading this particular version of the script, won the match by four goals to two and Farnborough FC has given the distinct feeling of being in a downward spiral ever since. If we fast forward to Tuesday night, the reality of the club’s current position was thrust into the national spotlight in the harshest possible way. As if a lengthy midweek trip from Hampshire to Cornwall wasn’t enough of an endurance test in itself, the half-time scoreline giving a seven-one lead to Truro City surely only compounded the agony during what has been a difficult season for the club so far. The team rallied in the second half, but the final score saw them surrender by eight goals to two. One can only imagine how the long journey back from that match must have felt. The result left Farnborough in nineteenth place in the Blue Square South table, just three points above the relegation places. But...

The Twohundredpercent Pre-Season Predictions: Conference South

There is a lot of money flying about in the Blue Square South this season as the teams jostle to fill the void at the top left by Braintree Town and Ebbsfleet United. The gap between those with a decent budget and those without seems to be growing a bit more in the southern half of Step 2 than in the northern half. Oh and all the teams who have enjoyed a nice little comfort zone around the M25 and M4 corridor have a lovely jaunt down to Cornwall to look forward too. Promotion Contenders Woking seem to be nailed on favourites to win the league and its certain that they have a very strong squad. But they will face some stiff competition from Dover Athletic, Chelmsford City and Eastbourne Borough. Gary Hill turned the squad when he joined as manager last season so expect big things in his first full season in charge, reports from pre-season games suggest they are looking like a quality side already. The fact that some players have taken a wage cut in order to stay suggests a team with proper ambition. Dover Athletic may have lost talisman striker Adam Birchall to Gillingham but they should still give the top teams a run for their money. In comes George Purcell from York CIty, he’s full fit after an injury-ravaged season but should be on...

Non-League Videos Of The Week: The Play-Offs

The Premier League season is still going and the Football League season ended at the weekend, but the non-league play-offs have already begun and, in some cases, have already ended. The Ryman League Premier Division play-off final was played on Saturday between Tonbridge Angels and Lowestoft Town, with the semi-finals having seen Tonbridge having beaten Harrow Borough and Lowestoft Town having won a local derby against Bury Town.   In the Football Conference, meanwhile, the semi-finals are played over two legs. In the Blue Square North, AFC Telford United travelled to Warwickshire to play Nuneaton Town in the first leg of their semi-final last week, looking to take an advantage back to New Bucks Head for the second leg of their match.   Finally, in the Blue Square South, there was another derby match in the semi-finals as Woking played Farnborough FC in the first leg of their semi-final last Wednesday, whilst Chelmsford City were at home against Ebbsfleet United in their first leg the night before.     Follow Twohundredpercent on Twitter...
