Non-League Videos Of The Week: 09-10-2011

The football clubs of the Premier League and the Championship had a break for another round of international matches this weekend, but there were few such luxuries for the butchers, bakers and candlestick makers of non-league football with a round of fixtures which included the Preliminary Round of another competition which has suffered a little damage to its reputation in recent years, the FA Trophy. We have four matches for you this evening, one from the Blue Square Premier, one from the Blue Square South, one from Division One of the Northern League and one from the FA Trophy itself. First up is a match between two clubs with upwardly mobile ambitions this season. Mansfield Town are hanging around on the brink of a place in the Blue Square Premier play-offs, whilst Grimsby Town, meanwhile, have recovered from a dreadful start to the season and are now heading towards the middle of the table. Our second match is the Blue Square South match between Havant & Waterlooville and Bromley. Havant have had a diifficult start to the season and are not far above the relegation places in the table, while Bromley are in mid-table with one eye on an end of season play-off place. Our final two matches are from a slightly lower level of the non-league game. In Division One of the Northern League, Spennymoor Town are chasing...

Non-League Videos Of The Week: 25-09-2011

This week’s non-league videos of the week come from a variety of different competitions, including the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Vase. First up, though, is the match between Cambridge City and Banbury United in the Southern League Premier Division. Cambridge were beaten in the play-offs in this league last season, and are hoping to go one better than that this this season, whilst Banbury United are are hoping to challenge for the championship themselves. Our second match comes from Division One North of the Northern Premier League and is between Garforth Town, who have made an indifferent start to the season, and another side sitting just above the relegation places, Warrington Town. Our third match is the match between Enfield Town and Cheshunt in Division One North of the Ryman League, a home match for Enfield which was played, because their new ground isn’t quite ready yet, at Cheshunt. Finally, in the FA Vase, we have the match between two sides from Division Two of the Northern League, Hebburn Town and Brandon United. Our thanks, as ever, go those that take the trouble to record, edit and upload these matches.         You can follow Twohundredpercent on Twitter...

Non-League Videos Of The Week: 20/08/2011

Well, all of the leagues have finally started. The Isthmian League caught up with the rest and started its competitive season this weekend, meaning that everyone has now started for the new season, and this evening two of our four matches come from this league. First up, though, we’re off to Surrey for Chertsey Town’s first match in Division One Central of the Southern League. Chertsey were promoted after finishing in second place in the Combined Counties League last season, after the champions, Guildford City, were unable to take up their promotion place because of ground issues. Slough Town, meanwhile, missed out in the semi-finals of the play-offs last season and will be hoping to go one better this season.   Our second match is from the Division One South of the Isthmian League. Maidstone United were relegated from the Premier Division of the League last season, and their first match of the new season was at “home” – their current temporary home is at Sittingbourne – against Whitehawk, the Brighton-based club that only missed out on promotion at the end of last season after losing the play-off final in this division against Leatherhead.   The third match is from Division One North of the Isthmian League, and is between Ilford and Enfield Town. Enfield, as regular readers of this site will already aware, will be moving to their...

Ten Years Of Enfield Town

With the future of Supporters Direct still under threat, it is worth taking a moment to reflect upon an anniversary that will most likely go unremarked upon elsewhere, but is still an anniversary that has changed our perception of how football clubs can be run. Long before Chester FC or FC United of Manchester, before even AFC Wimbledon were formed, the first club set up in protest at the ownership of one individual took their first steps. Yet Enfield Town have become something of a footnote in the history of the supporters trust movement in Britain, yet their story demonstrates that the twin virtues of passion and patience can yield rewards of their own. Enfield FC were, by many standards, amongst the giants of non-league football. Eight times winners of the Isthmian League, twice winners of the Alliance Premier League (now the Blue Square Premier), twice winners of the FA Amateur Cup and the FA Trophy, and FA Cup giant-killers, this was a club with a sense of history and of expectation. The introduction of automatic promotion and relegation between the Football League and the Football Conference in 1987, however, hit the club hard and they were relegated in bottom place in 1990. Widely expected to make an immediate return to the league, they stalled in the Isthmian League, finishing in second, second, third and second place in the...
