Palace vs Wednesday: The Tension Mounts

With Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion having already secured promotion back into the Premier League, the last day of the season in the Championship this weekend might have threatened to be something of a damp squib. At the top of the table, however, there is still one play-off place to be fought for, and anybody that has raised their eyebrows about the recent promotions of Burnley and Hull City into the Premier League from the Championship play-offs may well have more to get excited about if Blackpool, of all people, can beat Bristol City to secure the fourth play-off spot on Sunday afternoon. The main event of the weekend, however, will come at Hillsborough, where Sheffield Wednesday take on Crystal Palace. If Palace win or the match end in a draw, Wednesday will be relegated. If the home side can win, however, they will stay up and Crystal Palace will drop into the bottom two divisions of the Football League for the first time since 1977. It promises to be quite an occasion. The BBC will be covering the match live and, with tickets on sale for just £10, it is expected that a capacity crowd of almost 40,000 will be there for it. For the two clubs concerned, both of whom have significant financial problems, it is an absolutely critical match. Crystal Palace had a chance to...

Exclusive: Details Of Palace Diddy Takeover Confirmed

Exiting from administration might prove to be more painful than Crystal Palace supporters than they had at first expected after plans were leaked today over the proposed take-over of the club by music producer and clothes designer Sean “Diddy” Combs earlier today. Combs is said to have been looking to invest in English football for some time and had considered Portsmouth as well as Crystal Palace, who are currently fighting a desperate bid to retain their place in the top two divisions of English football, a record that they have held since 1977. The club was involved in the scramble for a place in the play-offs in the Championship, but a ten point deduction after they were put into administration last month coupled with a poor run of form after the departure of manager Neil Warnock for Queens Park Rangers shortly afterwards. The club has been up for sale since it was forced into administration, but Combs emerged as an unlikely buyer for the club last month. It was said that he had considered Portsmouth and Palace but has expressed a preference for Palace because of its closer proximity to Central London and because he “liked the name” of the club. Details have now been leaked of how he intends to save Palace and rebrand them, according to sources close to him, “to bring them into the twenty-first century,...

Match Of The Week: Crystal Palace 1-2 Cardiff City

For supporters of both Crystal Palace and Cardiff City, 2009/10 has been a season that has taken a turn for the strange. Both clubs are in mortal peril. Crystal Palace are in administration and the Championship relegation places following the ten point deduction that comes with entering it, whilst Cardiff City still haven’t seen off the tax man and still face a winding up petition. However, both clubs could find routes off the hook. A place in the Premier League – certainly not an unreasonable proposition, considering that they are in fourth place in the table and heading for the play-offs at the end of the season – is still possible for Cardiff City, and this may be a route out of the crippling debt that they are currently burdened with. If that seems a contradictory state of affairs, it’s not quite as crazy as what has been going on at Crystal Palace. The club’s entry dropped them into a relegation zone like a stone into a pond. This put them up for sale, and amongst the most serious interest in buying the club is reported to have come from the noted hip hop producer, fashion designer and (probably) wearer of diamonds, Sean “Puff Daddy or P-Diddy, Depending Upon How Old You Are” Combs. The likelihood of Palace taking to the pitch wearing fur-lined and diamond-studded shirts and replacing...

Match Of The Week: Crystal Palace 2-2 Aston Villa

Romance is all very well, but the cold, hard truth is that Crystal Palace need money. With a ten point deduction having almost certainly put paid to their ambitions of making the play-offs for a place in the Premier League, the FA Cup is their best chance of making some money this season.
