Video of the Day: Coventry City vs Blackburn Rovers, 1995

Coventry City play Blackburn Rovers in the First Round of the League Cup tomorrow night. Both sides, it might well be argued, are at the lowest ebbs in their recent histories, with Coventry having been relegated to League Two and Blackburn to League One at the end of last season, although Coventry City did at least get their new season underway with a comfortable home win against Notts County at the weekend. Blackburn, however, lost by the odd goal in three at Southend United. Their waiting spell in football purgatory continues. For this morning’s video, however, we travel back...

Charlton Athletic & Coventry City: Brothers In Arms

There has been a definite change in tone in the nature of supporter protests against those who are mismanaging some of our football clubs. In years gone by, they could come to feel like an insular matter, and for those looking on from the outside it could feel a little like intruding a private matter to express much support. From joint protests between supporters of Oxford United and Reading when it was proposed that the two clubs should merge under the “Thames Valley Royals” name in 1983 through to the Fans United day held at Brighton & Hove Albion’s...

Video of the Day: Coventry City vs Sheffield United, November 1973

In League One tomorrow afternoon, Coventry City and Sheffield United will play a match of little consequence in the league other than to cap the end of an underwhelming season for both clubs. Sheffield United are in ninth place in the table, four points from a play-off place with two matches left to play, most likely to tall an order for the Blades to be able to make up. Coventry City have seen their season crumble to an even greater extent and are in twelfth place in the table, with early season hopes of a promotion push having fallen...

Coventry City & The Franchising Of London Wasps

For a couple of weeks or so, there was something approaching normality at The Ricoh Arena. After an absurd amount of time away, Coventry City Football Club was back home with a team that was performing reasonably well on the pitch, and all was as near as things have been at this basket-case of a club over the last two or three years or so. It didn’t take long, however, for a cat to be thrown amongst the pigeons yet again for the long-suffering supporters of the club. Or a Wasp, to be a little more precise. Earlier on...

Plus ça Change: The High Court Damning Of Coventry City

When the verdict was delivered at the High Court in London earlier this week, it couldn’t have been done so in a more emphatic manner. Contrary to the many public statements on behalf of the club over the last few months or so, Mr Justice Hickinbottom ruled that Coventry City Council had not acted “irrationally” in refinancing a loan taken out by the owners of the Ricoh Arena, ACL, at the start of last year, and that this loan didn’t, as the club had previously claimed, breach European State Aid law. These verdicts, however, were not the only bad...
