Match Of The Past: Colchester United

We return this morning to our ongoing series of archive videos of the clubs of the Football League Championship with Colchester United. Elected into the Football League in 1950, Colchester have spent the overwhelming majority of their sixty-three years since in the bottom two divisions of the league, with two seasons back in the Football Conference in the early 1990s and two years in the Championship during the last decade. Our first match is one of the biggest FA Cup upsets of the 1970s. Colchester were in Division Four when they were drawn to play Leeds United, who the previous year had reached the semi-finals of the European Cup and the final of the FA Cup, at Layer Road in front of the cameras of Match Of The Day. Our second match was another match that attracted the cameras of the BBC, this time for top of the table Division Four match against Sheffield United. We then have two matches from the middle of the 1990s – an away match against Oxford United from the 1995/96 season, followed by a trip to The Hawthorns to play West Bromwich Albion at the start of the following season. We then finish off with a home match against Nottingham Forest from 2006 and a trip to Carrow Road to play Norwich City in League won on the opening day of the 2009/10...
