The 200% World Cup: Argentina vs Belgium, LIVE!

Good afternoon, sports fans. Edward and I are here from five o’clock on with a liveblog of the third quarter-final match at the 2014 World Cup finals, between Argentina and Belgium. Now, these two teams met in both the 1982 finals, when the then-defending champions were beaten by Belgium in the opening match, though four years later Argentina got their revenge with a win in the semi-finals four years later. You can follow 200% on Twitter by clicking...

The 200% World Cup: The USA vs Belgium – Live!

I’m struggling to think of a harder working team than the USA in this tournament, sports fans. They may not be the most technically accomplished team playing this summer, but they certainly put in a full ninety minutes in every match that they play, and I even suspect that there’s a chance that they might edge past Belgium this evening. Food for thought time – there hadn’t, prior to the start of this tournament, been a quarter-finalist from the CONCACAF region since the USA were beaten at that stage by Germany in 2002. This year, if the USA win,...

The 200% World Cup: World Cup Breakfast – Conspiracy! Conspiracy!

So FIFA spoke, and when they did, it was with a mighty, vengeful wrath. Luis Suarez’s World Cup is over, and Uruguay is apoplectic over the decision, with both journalists and the public crying foul play over the decision to ban Suarez from all football related activities for four months and from his country’s next nine international fixtures. On the basis of evidence taken from anything like am objective viewpoint, however, there is little upon which to base a conspiracy theory of much merit. Arguing over the justice or otherwise of the length of the ban would seem to...

The 200% World Cup: The Group H Final Round – Live!

And so, this is it. The final pair of group matches at Brazil 2014. Belgium head the group and are already in the second round. They need a point to guarantee that they will finish top but in reality, they are likely to whatever happens, bar some very strange results. Their opponents, South Korea, have been completely unremarkable in the tournament but could still qualify with a win tonight. More probable, though, is that Germany’s opponents in the second round will be either Algeria or Fabio Capello’s Russia. Algeria are currently in second position by virtue of their 4-2...

The 200% World Cup: Belgium v Russia – Live!

They may well be the great hope of many for this tournament, but there were times during their opening match against Algeria looked as if they might not be able to live up to the hype that has preceded them. Still, they got three points from their opening match and a win this evening against a Russian team that looked similarly pedestrian in drawing against South Korea in their opening match will at least get them through to the Second Round of the competition. The Russian coach Fabio Capello, meanwhile, is under pressure. A draw in his opening match...
