The Twohundredpercent Pre-season Predictions: The Southern Premier League

The Southern Premier League has a new sponsor this year, the same one as its northern counterpart so make sure you don’t confuse the two. Helpful. Anyway, teamwise the biggest relief for those footballers who get car sick is that Truro have been promoted, so that’s one afternoon spent on the M5 looking at the back of caravans which teams and fans alike won’t have to endure. Salisbury are also gone, climbing back from whence they came with their giant budget and full-time players. Joining the league are AFC Totton and Frome, both know the league well and both have impressive squads for the coming season. Frome can even boast a current England captain among their ranks, speedy winger Luke Ballinger is also the skipper of the national Futsal team. With a final at Wembley the ultimate reward, there is all to play for and our first match comes from it. Our first match sees Dartford of the Blue Square South travel to Thurrock. The two teams are both battling relegation from that league at the moment, so this match might turn out to be a welcome relief from their poor league form. The second match also comes from the FA Trophy. Welling United have had their fair share of financial difficulties so far this season, but on the pitch they have been having quite a successful time of it and currently sit in third place in the Blue Square South. They were at home on Saturday afternoon against Tonbridge Angels of the Ryman League Premier Division. Tonbridge were also subject to rumours about their situation earlier this year, but they have had a reasonable start to the season and are in eleventh place in the table. Our third match comes from the Premier Division of the Zamaretto League. Weymouth’s difficulties have been extensively documented on this site...

Bedford Town of the Southern League Premier division are in a slow state of decline, having released four of their players just before Christmas. The supporters trust would like to help, but they still aren’t even recognised by the club itself. It’s a familarly depressing tale.
