FC United, Altrincham, Money & Principles

Somehow or other, it was always going to end up this way. If there is such a thing a cohesive protest movement within modern football, a considerable proportion of it surrounds FC United of Manchester, a club borne more than a decade ago of the weariness that some supporters have felt at the direction that the game has taken since broadcasters bought the game. This is a club that decided from inception that it would have principles that it would stick to. These principles were seldom likely to be challenged as the club rose from the North West Counties...

Non-League Videos Of The Week: 18-08-2012

The premier division of the Football Conference may have started last weekend, but this weekend is the one that we’re marking as the start of the new football season and the return of our non-league videos of the week. Tonight, we have four matches from four different divisions as clubs get back to competitive action after their summer break. Our first match comes from the Blue Square Bet South, and is the match between Dover Athletic and Farnborough FC. The home side ended last season two places and five points from the play-off places and will hoping to go one better this season, whilst Farnborough, having been deducted five points during the season for a breach of the Football Conferences financial rules, ended the season in sixteenth place in the table, just four points above the relegation places. Our second match comes from the Blue Square Bet North, and is the match between Altrincham, who also finished just outside the play-off places at the end of last season, and Brackley Town, who are playing at this level for the first time having won the Southern League Premier Division by eight points last season. Our third match is between Waltham Forest and Grays Athletic from Division One North of the Ryman League – with Grays being amongst the favourites for promotion from that division – and we finish off with...

Match Of The Week: Altrincham 3-2 Vauxhall Motors

Well, I’ve been absent from twohundredpercent for a while due to work commitments, but having finally got some time off, and with half the family off enjoying themselves in New Zealand, my dad and I decided to do what any self-respcting twohundredpercenter would – we decided to head south and take in some non-league football. Not just any non-league football, mind you. Over the next ten days or so we’re taking the opportunity to revist some old haunts – starting with this trip to Moss Lane. It was a fine afternoon and in its own right a thoroughly entertaining game between two teams who couldn’t be faulted for commitment – we had a few goals, a penalty, a red card, plenty of huff and puff, occasionally a bit of aggro, and all topped off with a last minute winner for the home side. But let’s be honest – decent game though it was, I wasn’t really here to watch Kevin Holsgrove and Shaun Densmore. I was here to rekindle memories of the late 70s, and especially that afternoon in December 1977 when Moss Lane was the venue for my first ever live match – a 5-1 win over Workington. That was an Altrincham team just coming into its heyday, the team of Johnson and Rogers, King and Heathcote, the team that would rule the non-league world and regularly put league...

The Twohundredpercent Pre-Season Predictions: Conference North

Last year was pretty clear cut in the Conference North, Alfreton were pretty much definitely going up despite having a ridiculous backlog of games, the play-off places were fairly clear early on and Redditch were dropping like a stone from around February time, but this season it looks set to be a bit closer at both ends of the table and closer still in the middle. Along with relegated Altrincham and Histon there are the promoted pair of Colwyn Bay and FC Halifax, and the 22nd most northern team at Step 2 – Bishop’s Stortford, shifted over the north/south divide in the fall-out from Rushden and Diamonds’ demise. Bishop’s Stortford, like Histon and like Worcester before them will soon wise up to the difference between the two Step 2 leagues (Gloucester have only ever known the Northern side of the imaginary moving line which hovers over the Conference’s map). PROMOTION CONTENDERS It would be hard to bet against  FC Halifax Town being somewhere near the top of the table, The new boys have bulldozered their way back up the table and boast hot-shot striker Jamie Vardy as one of their key assets and laughed off an offer from Stockport to take him of their hands for a rumoured £50,000. Manager Neil Aspin has made a few key signings and if the Shaymen are as good as all their fans claim...
