The 200% World Cup: Germany vs Algeria, Live!

Hello sports fans, and welcome to the fourth Second Round match of this year’s World Cup finals. Can you believe that it’s almost a quarter of a century since Germany last won the World Cup? No, me neither. Still, here we are, and they’ve been impressive so far, thumping against Portugal and workmanlike against Ghana and the USA. This is a first time past the group stages for Algeria, meanwhile, and a little extra spice has been added to this match by recollections of The Shame Of Gijon, the 1982 match between West Germany and Austria that edged Algeria...

The 200% World Cup: World Cup Breakfast – Conspiracy! Conspiracy!

So FIFA spoke, and when they did, it was with a mighty, vengeful wrath. Luis Suarez’s World Cup is over, and Uruguay is apoplectic over the decision, with both journalists and the public crying foul play over the decision to ban Suarez from all football related activities for four months and from his country’s next nine international fixtures. The 200% World Cup: The Group H Final Round – Live!

And so, this is it. The final pair of group matches at Brazil 2014. Belgium head the group and are already in the second round. They need a point to guarantee that they will finish top but in reality, they are likely to whatever happens, bar some very strange results. A big game this evening, for Algeria. They lost their opening match but a win against South Korea will, in the light of Russia’s narrow defeat against Belgium a little earlier this evening, completely restore their chances of getting back into this group and perhaps finding a way into the second round of the competition. South Korea, meanwhile, will be eyeing Belgium up nervously before their final group match and will also be fully aware of the importance of getting a result this evening. The 200% World Cup: World Cup Breakfast, Day 6 – Brazil Misfires

It’s difficult to imagine from the outside what the pressure on a host nation can be like at a World Cup finals. Host nations that might otherwise have not won the tournament have done previsely that before, and the pressure on Brazil is surely only pushed up a couple of levels because of the nation’s heritage in this competition. Last night, the pressure started to tell a little as Brazil played out a lifeless goalless draw against Mexico in a match during which the hosts never fully came to life and might even have lost it in its closing...
