Non-League Videos Of The Week: 22-04-2012

It’s the penultimate week of the non-league season, and while most of the championship issues have now been resolved there are still relegation places to be filled at the bottom of many of the tables. We’ve got a mixture of the top and the bottom of the tables for you this evening, kicking off with the bottom of the Blue Square Premier. The relegation places are already decided, but AFC Telford United went into their final home match of the season looking to boost their league position with a win against Grimsby Town, while Newport County prepared for their forthcoming FA Trophy final with a home match against Alfreton Town and Forest Green Rovers played already relegated Darlington. In the Blue Square Bet South, meanwhile, champions Woking were at home against Truro City, whilst at the bottom of the table Farnborough and Havant & Waterlooville both went into their match at Cherrywood Road needing a win to avoid relegation from the division. Finally, we’re off to the Southern League Premier Division, where Weymouth needed a win against Hitching Town in order to guarantee avoiding relegation themselves. Non-League Videos Of The Week: 14/08/2011

The non-league season – the Isthmian League aside – started yesterday, and we’re delighted to be able to bring you highlights of four matches this evening, one from the Blue Square Premier, two from the Blue Square South and one from the Premier Division of the Southern League. The first match is between Hayes & Yeading United and Alfreton Town. Hayes & Yeading are starting a season in exile at Woking, having sold their Church Road ground without the former home of Yeading, The Warren, and the problems that they may face were placed into sharp focus by the fact that a crowd of just 262 people turned out for this match yesterday. A decade ago, Alfreton Town were beginning a season that would see them win the Northern Counties East League. Yesterday, they were playing their first match as a Blue Square Premier club. Our second match is from the Blue Square South, and is between Chelmsford City and Truro City. Chelmsford have been beaten in the semi-finals in the play-offs for the last three seasons, and will start this season with expectations of going one better than that this time around. Four years ago, meanwhile, Truro City were in the Premier Division of the Western League, but they start this season one step away from football’s fifth division, and optimistic of going higher than that themselves. We’re...

Sheffield Wednesday Send Their Boys To The Slaughter

Flashing across the BBC website on Sunday afternoon came a result which couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow or two: Alfreton Town 14-0 Sheffield Wednesday. The truth was less exciting than the initial rush might have led some Sheffield United supporters to hope. Wednesday hadn’t put out their first team for this match against a club from the Blue Square Premier, but neither had they dressed eleven scarecrows in blue and white striped shirts and placed them strategically around the pitch in the hope that no-one would notice. This score was achieved – if “achieved” is quite the right word – against a team made up of the players from the Sheffield Wednesday academy. The question to be asked at this stage, of course, is what exactly Sheffield Wednesday exactly hoped to achieve from this fixture. Is it possible that an official from the club took a glance at the name of the opposition, believed them to be considerably lower down football’s food chain than they actually are and decided to send the kids in the expectation that this would be a Sunday afternoon stroll in the park? Well, this is possible, and the extent to which it would be an understatement was borne out by the result. Alfreton were promoted as the champions of the Blue Square North at the end of last season and, while they –...
