Video of the Day: The Big Match – Tottenham Hotspur vs West Ham United, December 1969
Tottenham Hotspur make the short trip to Upton Park this evening for the last time, to play West Ham United in a Premier League match of critical importance at the top of the table. This morning, though, we’re going all the way back to the end of the 1960s for a match between the two clubs that featured on ITV’s weekend highlights show, The Big Match. It’s December 1969, the Saturday before Christmas, and host/commentator Brian Moore is bemoaning the effect of Christmas shopping on attendances, as mid-table Spurs play host to a West Ham United team that has lost five of their six last matches and are looking over their shoulders at the relegation places from their seventeenth place in the table.
This is a full episode of The Big Match, so there are two other matches for our consideration. The second match is between Everton and Derby County, a match which saw Everton go back to the top of the table – where they would end the season, while a snowbound Hillsborough plays host to a match between Sheffield Wednesday and Arsenal in a match notable for being almost impossible for black and white television viewers – still by far the majority, in 1969 – to discern between which team is which. Commentary for these two matches comes from Gerald Sinstadt and Keith Macklin, respectively.
