Podcast 144: This Is Going To Need Alan Mullery
For this week’s 200% podcast, we’re joined by the author Daniel Gray to talk about his new book, Black Boots & Football Pinks, as well as the value of nostalgia in modern football. In particular, we’re looking at the warming glow that comes from watching old YouTube highlights. Is it possible to really feel the past from watching old footage, or are we in danger of over-eulogising a past that wasn’t as great as our memories convince us? And will the future development of the game be stifled by continually dipping into its past for design prompts? This week have a look back some of our favourite YouTube videos from the past, including Meanwhile Back In Sunderland, There’s Only One Barry Fry, a Hartlepool United documentary from years ago which Daniel would dearly love to source a copy of (if you have any ideas regarding this, do please drop us a line) and, of course, Football Grounds From Newcastle To Wembley, With Alan Mullery.
