This week’s non-league matches of the week come from a variety different competitions. As the weather started to return to something approaching normal, the a near-full schedule of matches was played, including matches in both the FA Trophy and postponed matches from the FA Vase. Our first match is the FA Trophy match between Wimbledon and Braintree Town. Wimbledon could be forgiven for considering the FA Trophy something of a distraction in comparison with what is looking like becoming a three-way tussle for the Blue Square Premier championship with Crawley Town and Luton Town, but the current Wimbledon club has only played at Wembley once before, to play what was effectively a friendly match there against Corinthian-Casuals in 2008. The FA Trophy, we might compose, would look rather nice in their trophy cabinet, come the end of the season. Their opponents are the Essex side Braintree Town, who are currently top of the Blue Square South and might fancy their chances against a team with other things on their mind.
Our second match sees us at Gigg Lane for the Evostik League Premier Division between FC United of Manchester and FC Halifax Town. FC United’s FA Cup run came to an end during the week, and they have found themselves slipping into the relegation zone at the bottom of the league table, although they do still have games in hand on the teams above them. If they were to revive their fortunes in the league, they would have their work cut out against the league leaders, Halifax Town.
Our final match is from the Ryman League Premier Division, between Bury Town and Billericay Town. Bury are in second place in the table, and are still in touch with Sutton United, while Billericay are chasing a play-off place and could still manage to challenge at the very top of the table if they can go on a decent run.
