Euro 2016: Wales vs Portugal… Live!
Good evening everybody and welcome to the first of this summer’s Euro 2016 semi-finals, between Wales and Portugal in Lyon. This evening, one of two teams will be celebrating a historic win. Wales, of curse, have not reached the finals of a major tournament since the 1958 World Cup, and have never gone this far before. Portugal are a little more experienced than this at the latter stages of tournament football. They’ve been losing semi-finalists on four occasions and reached the final of the the 2004 tournament, which they hosted, before losing to Greece.
Tonight’s match will, of course, be billed as a clash between Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo. Bale may never again get the opportunity to prove himself at this level of the international game, whilst Ronaldo will be hoping to add an international medal to the numerous club and individual trophies that he has won over the year. Wales have probably been the team of the tournament so far, with wins against Slovakia, Russia, Northern Ireland and Belgium and only a last minute loss costing them defeat in their group match against England. Portugal have made the semi-finals of the tournament without winning a match in ninety minutes. After three draws in their group match, an extra-time win against Croatia and a penalty shoot-out win against Poland have seen them get this far. We’ll be back a little later with tonight’s team news.
