Euro 2016: Germany vs Ukraine… Live!
Welcome to this evening’s Euro 2016 live blog for this evening’s match – Germany vs Ukraine. Here come the champions. Germany’s win in the 2014 World Cup means that they can only be considered one of the favourites to win this tournament as well, but if you were to read some reports, you could be forgiven for thinking that they haven’t got a chance. This, of course, is ridiculous. There isn’t a stronger player for player squad in the entire tournament, and misgivings over the exact shape of their defence and the lack of a Best Striker In The World surely don’t negate the quality that is riven through the squad.
Ukraine, meanwhile, were reliant on the play-offs to get here. Having lost at home to both Spain and Slovakia in qualifying, they needed to go through the play-offs to get here after having finished in third place in their group. They beat Slovenia over two legs to get here, but this isn’t a strong Ukraine squad and a third placed spot might be their best hope of getting through to the next round, with Poland and Germany also in their group. Germany, meanwhile, could be forgiven a little trepidation at the latter part of their draw. They might well end up playing France in the semi-final, which seems to be tempering optimism that they might win the tournament for the first time in twenty years.
