Euro 2016: Germany vs Slovakia… Live

by | Jun 26, 2016

Our second match of the day at Euro 2016 sees one of the pre-tournament favourites, Germany, take on a team that has proved itself to be considerably stronger than may have expected before a ball was kicked, Slovakia. Thus far, Germany have remained slightly short of the pre-tournament expectations that were laid at their door. They won two of their opening three matches, but only scored three goals in the process and, it might be argued, still have some improving to do before they reach the latter stages of the competition. Although goals have not quite been as forthcoming as some might have wanted, though, they have certainly been defensively strong.

Slovakia, meanwhile, continue to ride the crest of a wave in reaching this stage of the competition. Their goalless draw against England saw them finish at the top of the group of third placed teams with four points from their three matches, including a win against Russia and a defeat against quarter-finalists Wales. Going into this match, they may also find their confidence boosted by memories of a recent friendly win against Germany which alerted many to the potential talents of this team. Can they repeat their friendly result under competitive conditions, though? We’ll find out in Lille this afternoon.
