Euro 2016: Portugal vs Poland… Live!

Good evening everyone, and welcome back to the football after another couple of days of madness. Anything we can do to block out the background noise, eh? And this evening’s match is the first of the quarter-finals, between Poland and Portugal. This is the best Poland team since that which reached the semi-finals of the 1982 World Cup, and its star man, Robert Lewandowski, still hasn’t caught fire yet. On the other hand, we’ve seen flashes of brilliance from Cristiano Ronaldo, but can this be enough to propel Portugal to the one area of football in which Ronaldo hasn’t...

Euro 2016: The Story So Far

Mark Murphy has enjoyed Euro 2016. But he ALWAYS enjoys international football tournaments, regardless of quality. It’s true. I have enjoyed Euro 2016 thus far, despite the tournament having a goals-per-game ratio which would have shamed the Italia ’90 bore-fest. Wales and Iceland being in the quarter-finals is evidence that the increase in finalists from 16 to 24 has had benefits. The Guardian newspaper’s Paul Wilson criticised the expanded field in his pre-tournament article Will it be a mouth-watering banquet or an overstuffed buffet? But he admitted that it was “good for the likes of Wales and Iceland,” as...

Euro 2016: England vs Iceland… Live

Hello everybody, and welcome to tonight’s live-blog for the Euro 2016 match between England and Iceland. This is a unique match in the history of this tournament for a multitude of different reasons, not all of them to do with football. And, unpleasant though it may well be, I’m going to take a moment to talk about this. The strong likelihood is that England, who have long played the pantomime villain in the theatre of international football, might be set to make the transition into being the real thing tonight. There is likely to be a unified visceral hatred...

Euro 2016; Spain vs Italy… Live

Good afternoon, everybody, and welcome to the first of our two matches from Euro 2016 today, perhaps the most keenly awaited of all of these second round matches. This is, of course, a repeat of the final of four years ago, when Spain demolished Italy with a performance that was probably the peak of that team’s powers. In 2016, however, Spain are probably not quite as strong as that team was and predicting an easy victory for them isn’t necessarily a foregone conclusion, and that’s before we even move onto the question of why these two teams are playing...

Euro 2016: Hungary vs Belgium… Live

The last of our three Euro 2016 matches for the day comes from the south of the country, between Belgium and Hungary. Belgium are starting to move into gear following a disastrous performance in their opening match against Italy. Comfortable wins against Ireland and Sweden were enough to put them into the second round despite this opening loss and a team of many talents seems to be finally coming together. With such a lop-sided draw having been delivered, it remains entirely possible that the FIFA rankings’ second placed team might yet be able to get the final of this...
