Football League Review: The Return of the Murray

If they closed their eyes for just a moment, it must have felt like old times. A crowd in excess of thirty thousand people, a tight, competitive game against familiar opposition, for a short while on Saturday evening Aston Villa supporters might have been forgiven feeling as though they’d been asleep for a couple of years and awoken to find themselves back in the Premier League. The problem with dreams, however, is that we always wake up from them, and the rudes awakening that Villa supporters received came in the form of forty-five minutes of football during which all...

Premier League Review: Fortune – Always Hiding

There wasn’t a great deal of booing when the full-time whistle blew at the Olympic Stadium earlier this afternoon, although the biggest single reason for this was most likely because there weren’t that many home supporters still present when the referee put it to his mouth. Say what you like about the ham-fisted nature of the arrangements now surrounding West Ham United and their new home, but on the evidence of this match at least the exits are still working properly. At the very start of the season, West Ham United’s lack of ignition was something of a mystery....

Podcast 73: Football 100 Years In The Future

This week’s 200% podcast sees us take a great leap into the future, in the form of attempting to predict what the game will be like in 100 years’ time. Edward takes the utopian view and Ian takes the dystopian view, but who will be correct in the long run? Will it be a victory for football still being exactly the same in 2116 as it is is in 2016, or will the game in a century’s time be governed by the Premier League in a Death Star orboted by Robo-Ken-Bates, to a background of Cher dance remixes? Fortunately,...

Aleksander Ceferin: The UEFA President Who Wasn’t There

Since the largely-unheralded Aleksander Ceferin was elected Uefa president on September 14th by 42 votes to 13, streams of questions have emerged on almost everything about him. Such a victory would be remarkable for an experienced, well-known football administrator.  Indeed, his emergence as a candidate from out-of-nowhere was, literally, remarked upon throughout the campaign. As was once said disparagingly of broadcaster David Frost, Ceferin almost “rose without trace.” Yet the few traces of his football administrative experience are fading under scrutiny. The alleged support Ceferin received from Fifa president Gianni Infantino was not criticised by all respected writers. World...

Football League Review: Rovers Return(ish)

It took them eight games, but they got there in the end. After a disastrous start to the season, Blackburn Rovers finally picked up their first win of the season against Rotherham United on Saturday afternoon, a win that lifted Owen Coyle’s team off the bottom the table whilst providing a little respite to supporters who have doubtless felt besieged from just about all sides, of late. To a point, perhaps Coyle was somewhat fortunate to have his team lining up against the most profligate defence in the top four divisions of English football – Blackburn’s fourth goal was...
