This week’s Video Of The Week comes courtesy of RSC Anderlecht’s YouTube page, and is the complete 1976 European Cup Winners Cup Final between Anderlecht and West Ham United. West Ham’s achievement in reaching a European trophy final in a season during which they finished in eighteenth place can’t be understated, but they met their match in an Anderlecht team that contained, amongst others, François Van Der Elst (who went on to play for West Ham between 1981 and 1983) and the Dutch pairing of Arie Haan and Rob Rensenbrink. Both of the latter two went on to play in the 1978 World Cup final for the Netherlands against Argentina – a match which the Netherlands came within one kick (one Rob Rensenbrink kick, as it happened) away from snatching away from the host nation. The last few days haven’t been entirely happy ones for West Ham United. Their win against Birmingham City last week lifted them out of the relegation places, but they had to settle out of court with Alan Curbishley, are considering some odd legal action against Chelsea and the FA and have been rebuffed in their hopes to move into the Olympic Stadium.
The battle for control of West Ham United was fought as much in the pages of the sports press as it was between the parties concerned, and it was the tabloids that won out for David Sullivan and David Gold.
Dean Ashton’s career is over at the age of just twenty-six. Tragedy though this is, he can at least reflect upon the fact that he made it in the first place, and that his career in the game doesn’t have to be completely over. This may end up being a new opportunity presenting itself.
