Hammers, Blades & The Damage Done

Such was the effect of Bryan Robson’s predictably disastrous spell of Sheffield United in charge the following season, the saga of The Blades, West Ham United and Carlos Tevez has been largely forgotten by the media over the last twelve months or so. The story has, however, roared back into the headlines following the release of the findings of the arbitration panel which studied the case. As you may remember, there was controversy surrounding Tevez’s transfer to West Ham United from day one, and the irregularities rumbled on...

The Goal That Never Was

Posted by on 8:59 pm in English League Football | 5 comments

It was, by any standards, the most bizarre moment of the football season so far, and it’s difficult to imagine that it will be bettered. During Saturday afternoon’s match in the Championship between Watford and Reading, a goal was awarded that was not only controversial but didn’t actually happen at all. The strangeness started after thirteen minutes of the match, when Stephen Hunt’s corner bounced off Peter Eustace and well wide of the Watford goal. Linesman Nigel Bannister called referee Stuart Atwell and advised him...

Match Of The Week – Preston North End 1-3 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Posted by on 8:26 pm in English League Football | 0 comments

The term “sleeping giant” is a misused one, often used to describe a club that had a few glorious seasons, many years ago. If there are two clubs that deserve this particular epithet, then it would probably have to be Preston North End and Wolverhampton Wanderers. These are clubs that have hit the highest heights and plummeted the depths. Two of the original twelve founding members of the Football League that haven’t troubled the top division too much over the last couple of decades or so. It’s now impossible to be...

In Praise Of… Justin Fashanu. Norwich City vs Liverpool. February 9th, 1980.

You have to have some degree of sympathy for David Fairclough. Hamstrung from the start by the “Supersub” nickname that he acquired when he first appeared for Liverpool, everything he did seemed to be overshadowed by something or someone else. So it was with his hat-trick for Liverpool against Norwich City in February 1980 – long forgotten, when compared with possibly my favourite goal of all time. I’m talking, of course, of Justin Fashanu’s absolutely belting goal for Norwich City in the same match. It had...

In Praise Of… The St Albans City Club Video (1991/92)

It seems almost difficult to believe now, but there was a time when, if you saw the football on the television, that was it. You’d see the goals once, maybe twice, and then they’d disappear into the vaults of the BBC and ITV, only to resurface once or twice at random intervals on the likes of “On The Ball” and “Football Focus”. In the 1980s, video recorders started appearing in people’s homes and, in some very small way, the face of football was changed forever. By the late 1980s, boxes started...

Stable Management And The Conference

Posted by on 10:33 am in Non-League | 4 comments

An interesting article by David Conn in The Guardian yesterday highlighted steps being taken by the Football Conference to limit the boom and bust culture which has blighted the league over the last few seasons. They have lost Scarborough, Canvey Island, Halifax Town and Boston United in recent years, and drastic measures have been put in place by a league that is keen not to be seen in the wider press as the home of some financial basket cases. These moves are most welcome, as they seek to force a more responsible form of management upon its...
