Excellent piece, Mark. The Daily Mail piece had us laughing too.

As much as I hate the bloke, it’s never boring while he’s around!

Spot on to the author. As a Leeds fan whenever I hear this paragon of egotistical self importance open his mouth to criticise other clubs I cringe. Personally I’ve never bought a programme since he got his crayons out and started writing in it. I long for the day that our club and football in general rids itself of this thoroughly unpleasant individual.

A brilliant piece, beautifully written. I just wish it was 100ft high and adorned the East Stand – or better still, the Football League’s offices – instead of being tucked away here.

Very good mate. Your 6 word summary tell’s it all!

  5. Farty Foulke says:

Everyone pussy foots around Bates. Someone should pin down his former lawyer: that would be a properly revelatory piece.

  6. Martin says:

I’d like to thank Ken for instantly showing these hilarious new League ownership regulations up as not worth the paper they are written on.

    Three discretionary trusts, my arse.

  7. Richard says:

Excellent article. There’s not much the Sheffield Wednesday board has got right in the last decade, but not selling to Bates is one of them.

    “A true Master Bates”

    Brilliant.

I’m don’t comply with all this Bates hating. Yes he’s an arse with a mouth like a bog rat but generally communicated with comedy and ironic twist…. he’s a character… and for the last 8 years we’ve needed plenty of that. He hangs himself out to be shot but like it or loath it Bates saved Leeds United. As a result he has acquired the right to do it his way, he jumped on a sinking ship, blocked the holes and were rising again with his manager he put at the helm. Want multi- million (no-body) signings, premiership attitude, net wage demands and (J*hn T*rry) arseholes? go support City…

If, as a fan, your looking for serious cash to compete with the big boys then is there any one better qualified than Master Bates himself?

Lets rebuild tactically, concisely, professionally, get the academy firing, nurture a LUFC spine of talent, get commercial, sort the ground, build support, build profile and get back to premiership days.

Being the first serious casualty of the SKYTV generation might ironically work in our favour, we wont be the last big name catastrophe. Coming back with a more long term sustainable Ken Bates style approach might not be such a bad thing after all.

    sorry, typo in first post

A great response to the “joke” piece of journalism published in the mail. Please could you send this to the FL, who seem to be totally clueless in how to ensure some transparency is revealed about the Bates regime. ….. Maybe it is time to focus our pressure on the FL more than simply making a complaint on the “deaf ears” of the LUFC management team.

  12. Micky F says:

Airforce 5, so Bates is a “character” eh? Well that’s alright then, we can completely overlook his obnoxious and hypocritical comments about other clubs and his complete lack of scruples. So as long as he keeps ‘entertaining’ us with his endless supply of rent-a-gob quotes for the tabloids he’s OK in your books?

  13. Mark Murphy says:

    Airforce 5,

There is a deal of sense in what you say -your penultimate paragraph is spot on. But the problem is that Bates didn’t “save” Leeds United, in many people’s opinion.

A closer examination of his 2007 “re-takeover” of the club reveals anomaly upon anomaly, best summed up by CURRENT director Peter Lorimer’s 2006 insistence that Bates had got Leeds back on the right track.

Months later, £millions of debt, which Lorimer somehow overlooked, had plunged Leeds into “crisis,” – most of this debt NOT traceable to the execrable Ridsdale.

And, yes, “the man has history.” But, that’s the point. Chelsea Village, after early promise, was a failure which could well have destroyed Chelsea. And his tenure at Oldham, which Kelly also cites in his original feature, also ended in considerable tears…after early promise.

If you haven’t done so already, do read Tom Bower’s book ‘Broken Dreams’ which has a revealing chapter on Bates. It may give you cause to re-think.

  14. robert says:

Airforce5 misses the point. The article wasnt about Bates & Leeds; its about him as a person and how he behaves Leeds & football are merely the stage

  15. robert says:

and it was entirely accurate – read the chapter in Broken Dreams by Tom Bowyer
