…to any Liverpool fans still crowing about their “achievement” in reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League. This season’s team (or, indeed, even the one that won the damn thing in 2005) is not a great team. The Liverpool team above, however, is a great team. In this match, from 1988, they absolutely carved a pretty talented Nottingham Forest team into little pieces, chewed them up, and spat the pieces back at Brian Clough’s feet. Because of the post-Heysel ban on English clubs playing in Europe we’ll never know for sure, but they must have amongst the best teams in Europe, if not the best team in Europe at the time.
By the way, I’ll be attempting one of my sporadic minute-by-minute commentaries tonight – Spurs vs SC Braga in the UEFA Cup. Kick-off is at 20.15 GMT – it would be lovely if you stopped by.
