I’m really struggling to come up with the words to describe this shambles. I’ll try again in the morning.
Ian began writing Twohundredpercent in May 2006. He lives in Brighton. He has also written for, amongst others, Pitch Invasion, FC Business Magazine, The Score, When Saturday Comes, Stand Against Modern Football and The Football Supporter. Ian was the first winner of the Socrates Award For Not Being Dead Yet at the 2010 NOPA awards for football bloggers.
I think “shambles” was sufficent.
I am so, so, so very glad I did not attempt to watch this one live.
When zipping through at quadruple-speed on the TiVo, it actually rose to the level of “mildly interesting here and there”. This viewing technique saved my sanity in Ukraine’s last outing; and you can bet I’ll start late and have the fast-forward button ready the next–and, please God, last–time I see their distractingly gaudy Lotto logos too.
It figures that this one would have drawn a sane ref. Of all games that could have used some sendings-off and wacky decisions to open up the field and liven up proceedings, this was near the head of the list.
The most important thing to come out of this is: it proves defensive football is knackers. Switzerland are the first team to get knocked out of the World Cup without conceding a single goal. Didn’t do them any good at all, did it?
This is the type of game you get on the rare occasions I manage to get home in time for kick off. They’ve done studies.
I caught extra time in tesco’s (don’t ask) but even watching it on a wall of 32″ tellys didn’t help. Just as long as it is the last of these snoozeathons we will be alright. it is just a shame that Ukraine couldn’t get anything going- at least they tried (and the karma came back around fairly quickly in the shootout)
