This week’s Video Of The Week is a little late due to other commitments, but it is an absolute belter – the 1978 World Cup final between Argentina and the Netherlands. There will be more on here about the Netherlands at the 1978 World Cup finals over the weekend, and this is something of a taster for it. We get to see the Argentinian protests over Rene Van De Kerkhof’s lightweight cast before the match, then the entire match itself, including extra-time. The Dutch team, often overlooked in comparison with their 1974 team, came very close to winning the match, as you will see.
The Argentina team features Osvaldo Ardiles, Alberto Tarantini (who played a handful of games for Birmingham City, only for his career to end when he waded into the crowd to thump a supporter) and Daniel Passarella, who was the Argentina coach when they beat England at the 1998 World Cup finals. The Netherlands, meanwhile, were missing Johann Cruyff, but still had a team containing Arie Haan, Rob Rensenbrink, Johann Neeskens and Johnny Rep. Commentary comes from Hugh Johns, with Jack Charlton at his side.
