  1. No longer will England underestimate the Americans – the profile of the latter rose higher than ever after the Confederations Cup. I could see their match being a draw not unlike the one against Eire that kicked off England’s 1990 campaign. The Americans are good but aren’t necessarily the strongest among the 8 groups’ second seeds. Slovenia and Algeria have reasonable expecttations that they can make a contest of it. Slovenia, however, are one of those lower ranking European qualifiers who seem ripe for the picking by squads from developing nations – Serbia-Montenegro last time out, Scotland in pretty much every World Cup they have taken part in and Greece in 1994 are three such previous cases.

England should be very mindful of the United States, especially after they humbled successive teams at the Confederations and led Brazil 2-0 at half time.

Anyone who saw the Fulham – Juventus game a month or so ago will know that the Americans possess, in Clint Dempsey, a player capable of producing the sublime; someone who can turn a game single-handedly.

I’d disagree about Crouch being the first choice partner to Rooney. Heskey’s form and lack of playing time is a concern but Capello has stuck by him and, being a conservative coach he is, it is likely he will stick by the pairing that worked so well for the qualifiers. The resepective attributes of Crouch and Heskey are considerably different.

With regards to the right back position, Micah Richards will not make the squad. Capello is not a fan and prefers the experience and solidity of Wes Brown. I think the only positions in any doubt (barring injury) are right midfield and goalkeeper.

Continuing his preview of this summer (winter)’s events, Dotmund has now reached Group C, where he will do his best to cover the large three lions tattoo on his face and behave in the sort of balanced way we like here at Twohundredpercent.
