Chelsea are preparing to follow Newcastle’s lead by selling the naming rights for Stamford Bridge, new chief executive Ron Gourlay revealed on Thursday. Although insisting that Chelsea need the millions such a lucrative sponsorship deal would secure, Gourlay promised that the words ‘Stamford’ and ‘Bridge’ will remain.

“We understand that this is a sensitive issue for our fans and that is why we would keep the name Stamford Bridge in any deal”.

Perhaps he’s naming it “sportsdirect.com@St James Park” now, so that when another sponsor comes in next season, the new name won’t sound quite so bad?
Either a sophisticated sense of humour, as you say, or a finely-tuned plan to get the fans to accept “Northern Rock Park” next year…

There is definitely a majority of the fans against the naming of St James Park but there is also quite a few fans like myself who can see the benefit of the cash generated IF WE THOUGHT FOR ONE MINUTE IT WOULD GO TO THE TEAM AND NOT INTO MR CASHLEYS BACK POCKET. God I hope we are still challenging for promotion in january as if we are not then the likes of Carroll,Taylor(S)Ranger Guttierez etc will all be sold on. Then again even if we are up there they might go anyway if a half sensible offer came in. Line up in an orderly fashion to jump off the Tyne Bridge please!!!!!
