Match Of The Past Special: Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow

Many thousands of football supporters will have looked at this weekend’s fixtures with a sense of impending doom, checking for the dreaded abbreviation which means an afternoon in front of the television: “P-P.” These days, ice on the roads around a football ground or anything approaching a frozen pitch is often enough to mean the cancellation of a match, but it wasn’t ever thus and, in the absence of having any Non-League matches to bring you this week – the weather took an axe to the programmes of many leagues this weekend – we thought we’d bring you some matches played on pitches covered with a thick layer of snow from down the years, kicking off with an FA Cup Third Round match between Hull City and Charlton Athletic from January 1971.

Our second match comes from Division One and January 1973, and it features the defending league champions, Derby County, making a trip to Anfield to play the team that would go on to end that season as the champions of England, Liverpool, and this is followed by a clutch matches from the long, cold winter of 1978/79. First up is a match from 1979 between Manchester City and Chelsea, and this is followed by a complete episode of ITV’s The Big Match from the January 1979, featuring a match between Sheffield Wednesday and Arsenal and backed by a match between Stoke City and Oldham Athletic which didn’t even make it to full-time. Oldham also feature in our next match, a home match against Watford from 1981, and our final match is an FA Cup Fifth Round match from February 1996 between Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur, another match which fell foul of the weather after starting in playable conditions.
