I’m fed up of what has become ‘Poppy Fortnight’ and the near fashion statement thee symbol has become, This year I paid my usual quid but declined the offer of the poppy. I know I paid for it and keenly, but privately, observed the two minute silence on Sunday.

In 1940 My grandfather, although then in his early thirties and in a reserved occupation. joined the RAF and flew two tours as navigator on bombers. He never bought a poppy in his life (mainly because he had intense hatred for Earl Haig who name was on the poppy until recent years and who he considered to be an evil butcher directly responsible for the deaths of a million soldiers).

My Granadad would be appalled at the poppy fascism and the near-glorification of war that some football clubs promoted this past weekend.
