Honduras won my heart and mind. After their warm-up, they were firing shots in against the reserve keeper when one fizzed past the post, hard and low, and smacked an old woman in the face. How she didn’t lose consciousness, I don’t know. After medical attention, she returned about quarter of an hour in to watch the rest of the game.
After the match, the outstanding Roger Espinoza (subbed off after taking a bang on the thigh so far as I could see, incidentally) came over to the Gallowgate end, sought out the old woman and handed over his match shirt. She accepted after initially seeming reluctant. I don’t know if Espinoza hit the fateful ball in her direction and even if he did, he didn’t have to hand his short over. In that moment, he displayed more class than Muniain, Mata and plenty others failed to do during the game.

    Forza Honduras

I was at the match too, and saw it from the corner – yep, it was Espinoza’s shot during the warm-up that hit the old lady. Really nice gesture from the player.

The Spanish played well but their attitude was absolutely terrible. Muniain typified this with a Jekyll and Hyde performance; he had some superb attacking runs, but was petulant and argumentative.

Mind, I think a few Hondurans were guilty of a bit of gamesmanship; their no.7 rolled on the floor in agony for the best part of a minute, before jumping up and sprinting down the wing when his team regained possession.

Great to see the crowd get behind Honduras when they were hanging on in the second half. I thought some of their players looked a bit surprised by the Hon-du-ras chants!
