  1. Derek Trotter indeed. Somehow, Redknapp has escaped any blame for the Pompey overspend. It may have been Sacha Gaydamak’s readies that led to the purchase of all those £50,000 a week players, but Redknapp advised him – and sensibly bailed out before it all went belly up. How tainted is that Cup Final win now? Not that ‘Arry cares – he’s only going to do the same for Spurs.

    I think Martin O’Neill is spot on. It seems bizarre to have a deadline that occurs once the season has started.

    The fuss and Sky Sports News-fueled hype leads me to think it serves only to liven up the quiet early weeks of the season. I can’t see a genuine footballing reason for a end of August/start of September cutoff.

    Not gonna happen. Levy is more shrewd than Gaydamak that’s for sure.
